At Long Last!

We know that your eyes have been bleeding. We've heard you screaming obscenities at us. And, by gum and by gosh, we've listened!

For your occular amazement, I present ShapeShifter 2.4b1 (updated below), a public beta. It's Universal, so your Intel Mac can finally get its spank on. It's got feature-parity with the PPC version, so you can use it to apply themes from way back in the day, or customize your Intellish icons or desktops. And it's even got a big speed boost when launching and quitting the prefpane, whoot! (small print: except for the first time you launch the prefpane)

Very Important Note: This is beta software. It might kill the dolphins. It might become the mote in your eye. It might do other cleverly worded things that I'm too fried to think of right now. Long story short: Use with care, and we're not responsible if it crashes on that old G3 you were using to power gramma's pacemaker.

And, since I know people are going to ask even though I said it above, yes, this build will work fine with any old guiKit you throw at it.

Finally, please report bugs in this thread. Please do not redistribute this build, or place it on any download sites - it's beta software and will be updating rapidly. And, again, please report bugs - if you don't tell us, we don't know!

Update: Grab ShapeShifter 2.4b2 - it works around an Apple bug that causes themes using large, tiling patterns to crash Cocoa apps on launch on x86 architecture.

Digg This!

Jean-Francois, please send a screenshot to jason at the name of this company. Also, please include the name of the theme you're using. And, if you're using Unifier or have hacked Safari to use Aqua rather than Metal, don't bother with the screenshot, as that's the cause of the issue and it's out of my control.

Posted by: Jason Harris on July 26, 2006 6:21 PM

Thanks for the pointer. I have no idea what is Unifier. However after looking here and there for anything I could have done to Safari, I realized that I had played with something called "Safaricons" a while ago. I uninstalled that the safari looks good now :)

No need to be harsh, you've said in bold letters to report bugs :)

By the way, congrats on the release of Shapeshifter! I'm sure this will please many people!

Thanks for the bug report, Mario.

I've duplicated your issue on Intel only - it's the same Apple bug that necessitated a fix to APE for me to work-around. Not a big deal, the bug is just wider than I'd realized. Will fix for ShapeShifter 2.4b2.

Crap.. its causing all programs I go to startup now to crash...

'Any easy way to stop this thing on the next reboot if the uninstaller is crashing too?

Posted by: Byron Faber on July 26, 2006 11:39 PM

Byron and others - if you're experiencing crashes, this is caused by the Apple bug I was (incompletely) working around. I've resolved it and will release a 2.4b2 tomorrow that includes the fix. In the meantime, you can disable ShapeShifter by logging in while holding the key. If you then delete <your home directory>/Library/Caches/ShapeShifter/Mods, that will revert you to Aqua.

The Apple bug will cause an immediate crash in Cocoa apps if you use a pattern with a large, tiled background, like Mes, Muku, or Pulsar. The vast majority of themes are not affected by the bug at all. If Calculator doesn't crash on launch, you're fine.

Posted by: Jason Harris on July 26, 2006 11:51 PM

similar disastrous effects. most apps crash, including system prefs. Safari wouldn't open hence couldn't read how to disable shapeshifter without having to revert to default settings thus eliminated all the other customised icons in the dock and desktop etc. How annoying is that ?

Posted by: peter Harvey on July 27, 2006 12:38 AM

Weee! every app crashes! Thanks for telling the way to get back good ol Aqua.

So you're saying ALL quikits work? Is there a good chance that older guiKits can fry my toaster? And my problem is really an Apple bug?

Great job guys, thanks for all the hard work on this release.

BUG or?

When Shapeshifter Intel beta is enabled, MacTheRipper won't start (I use it all the time)!

Don't know where else to report this

Posted by: Evaristo on July 27, 2006 6:35 AM

OK:

so far, if SS Beta1 is enabled, MS Word 2004 and MacTheRipper will not start. Adding them to excluded apps won't fix it.

Using 10.4.7 on a MacBook Pro 2Ghz 2GB RAM.

Thanks for the workaround Jason. I believe the theme I tried did have a big tiled background as you describe.

Has anyone got SmoothStripes working on Intel? The menu bar is not complete for me.

Using b1 all is well except Hogwasher. On first start it is fine. If I switch to another app then back to HW it does not appear. I cana quit it but it will not then restart unless a reboot of the system is made.

Updated to ShapeShifter 2.4b2 to resolve the large pattern issue that was causing Cocoa crashes. More info in the post above.

I'm also experiencing the bug with Aqua Extreme, in both beta 1 and 2.

The unified aqua menubars in apps like mail, or system preferences, are incorrectly displayed as non-unified 10.2-esque menubars.

Great work on the beta so far though!

bug report,

after upgrading to beta 2 all of the previous notifications i had checked as "don't bug me again" came back. not a big deal, but i wanted to let you know.

Posted by: xxdesmus on July 27, 2006 1:40 PM

xxdesmus, that's by design. The rationale is that some fairly large things can change between releases, so it's safe to reset the "Do Not Ask Again" state. For normal releases, it's not a big deal, but for betas, which can turn around quickly, it can be annoying.

Kevin, the download link was a problem with our blog - fixed.

Looking into the rest.

Question: which version of Application Enhancer does 2.4b1 and 2.4b2 use?

On my MacBook Pro APE is 2.0.1.

By the way, I've installed and updated my b1 with 2.4b2 and everything is fine. I'm just curious to see if I have the right APE version.

Jason would you let us know whats going on with many users, the Rosetta problem, why do all Rosetta apps stop working and whenever I run ShapeShifter it tells me "Shapeshifter requires Application Enhancer" when ApplicationEnchaner is there. I have reinstalled many times still no luck

Posted by: on July 28, 2006 1:45 AM

The new beta solved the Rosetta launch issues for the night. This morning I woke my machine up and was unable to launch Entourage 2004 because the MS Alerts Daemon was attempting to launch.

Running 'sudo killall translated' resolved the issue for now.

Posted by: Troy on July 28, 2006 5:07 AM

I've gotten b2 and things are better, just not great. My problem is, so far, limited to inability to right-click in non-Universal apps. Doing so crashes them. Interestingly, it also crashed Apple's Mail (the only UB I've gotten to crash). Mail crashes consistently, needing killall to get restarted.

All right-click (ctrl-click, mouse right button, SideTrack programmed corner) have same effect.

Posted by: FugaMas on July 28, 2006 6:53 AM

Jason, I'm on beta 2 now, and most everything seems to be working well. System prefs like to crash on me sometimes when I preview a theme, this also happened on b1. I sent the crash log via email.

Good work man.

Jason puth where are thou?

Posted by: on July 28, 2006 8:46 AM

When I open the SystemPreferences and ShapeShifter pane, the "new version" drop shows, and won't go away - regardless of which option i select.

Also, the tool windows in Graffle get all wiered out with "scan line" looking lines across each window. the main windows are fine - just the tools get messed up.

haven't noticed anything else. Good stuff!

Having issues with Adobe Photoshop CS2 here. No matter which guikit I try (So far, Milk, Nique and a couple of others) I get an error in Photoshop about not being able to complete my request because of an application error. Any idea what could be up with that? If you'd like screenshots or anything, just let me know.

Posted by: on July 28, 2006 12:44 PM

The "new version" notice goes away after you empty your Trash.

Solution:

- force empty the Trash
- restart then empty Trash

Posted by: Dom@IMF on July 28, 2006 10:04 PM

OK... So, I have totally erased SS. All of the above posts are confusing me.. Some people are saying that the new beta2 doesn't fix the problem, some people say it works!

Guuess it will be another month or so :(

R

Posted by: Ryan on July 28, 2006 10:19 PM

Chris Pak, if you purchase ShapeShifter, your registration will be good until whenever we charge an upgrade, which won't be the final release of this beta cycle, it'll be 3.0, whenever that comes. That said, I recommend you just evaluate during the beta cycle, and if you like it once we go final, by all means, throw money at us then! The demo period will be reset to 15 days when the release is out, and I'll probably do it for next beta too, if I remember. :)

Jacques, ShapeShifter uses APE version 2.0.2b1. You can find the current APE version by running the following Terminal command:
/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationEnhancer.framework/Tools/ape_install -s

Reinstalling ShapeShifter will reinstall APE 2.0.2b1 if you somehow aren't up-to-date (you should be).

The Rosetta issue: The "translated" process is the daemon that handles Rosetta. Something is getting screwy once a Rosetta app has launched. It appears to depend on the amount of virtual memory used by the launched process.

I'm investigating intensively, but don't yet have any answers aside from the short-term workaround that Rosyna posted earlier. I'll post a new beta ASAP, once I've got a fix in place. It's my highest priority.

FugaMas, this is probably your issue as well, although I'm not positive. What theme are you using?

NS, got your crashlog, investigating.

kitplummer, there's a "do not show again" checkbox. Check it, and the sheet will, unsurprisingly, not show again (at least, not until you grab a new version of ShapeShifter).

Shawn Grimes, yes, I'd like more info. Please email me at jason at the name of this company, dot com.

spclffred, what theme are you using? And do you have a download link for it? That's an odd error.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Posted by: Jason Harris on July 29, 2006 12:31 AM

Hi Jason,

I've installed both beta 1 and beta 2 and in the preference panel, for each install, APE is listed as 2.0.1.

When doing your terminal command:

/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationEnhancer.framework/Tools/ape_install -s

I get the message: No such file or directory.

Is there another way to check that beta 2 install the correct version?

- J

Posted by: Jacques on July 29, 2006 1:50 AM

I have to use sudo killall translated every time I want to run a PPC app with Rosetta. Then I don't have to disable Shapeshifter beta 2.

Evaristo

Posted by: evaristo on July 29, 2006 7:05 AM

Poster of right-click issue here.

I don't believe it's tied to what you said about a memory issue, though I *do* have memory issues. I have the 2 GHz chip but only 1 GB RAM. When my usual apps are running (Safari, Mail, Hogwasher, Seasonality, NetNewsWire, and iCal, as well as 4 menu thingies) I'll have 5 swap-files within 30 mins. of rebooting. It'll top out at 6. Nothing obvious in Activity Monitor but definitely a noticeable performance hit (though not as bad as my 1 GB G4 with 1.25 GB RAM with 5 swaps). So, I definitely have a memory issue.

To check I just tried three different themes, rebooting the machine each time loading just the 4 menu items plus iCal and Seasonality. There is 1 swap at that point. I start Mail and right-clicking in it to highlight a word in a new message kills Mail (though not immediately-get the error but the app stays present but dead until forced quit). Then try other non-UB apps at random and they all die in some right-click action (these at least go right away). So, one swap file, plenty of Apple installed RAM (at this point), issues remain. Am I the only one with right-click issue?

As for which themes, I've tried Truth, Ice, and Eternal Aqua for the above test. I had tried others over the past couple days.

Posted by: FugaMas on July 29, 2006 7:19 AM

Curiouser and curiouser. I've disabled SSb2, restarted, and now the right-click issue is still present. I'll swear on anything you want that was not the case yesterday. I *will* admit to the possibility it is random with SS off and I just hit a bad patch. But yesterday, Mail and Hogwasher were fine with SS off, and had been ever since I got this machine.

Whatever. I am now wondering about the version of APE. Mine is 2.0.1. I see in other posts you spec a beta version. Two questions:
1) Which APE b version should be used (IIRC I noticed references elsewhere on the site to b1 and b2?
2) Could using SSb with non-b APE somehow have corrupted my 2.0.1 APE?

And, like Jacques, the Terminal command to check the version resulted with no such file/directory. I drilled down and there is indeed no such there.

Posted by: FugaMas on July 29, 2006 7:55 AM

Everything works fine for me since b2, even rosetta apps. However there is one bug I've noticed, dunno if it happened in previous versions of SS or not, but Shark doesn't want to be skinned, it retains aqua

Posted by: Pilky on July 29, 2006 8:32 AM

BUG: When tweaking the EYLO theme, guitweak will not allow me to save my changes. I get a message that says: An unknown error prevented the operation from concluding. The only thing I was tweaking was the color of the text in the title bar, root menu, menu item, and desktop label.

Posted by: Zoran on July 29, 2006 8:57 AM

Last(?) right-click comment. I've trashed the APE and SS Preference Panes plus their Application Support and Preferences files. I still have my issue which is apparently, for sure, *my* issue. Thanks for listening. I hate mysteries like this. Now to go further into my backups. The good news is I can now move further with SS. I don't really use any non-UB apps in which right-clicking is a function (I have another solution for Hogwasher) and I'll just forget right-clicking in Mail until I figure this out. Hmmm, next will be to look at SideTrack.

Posted by: FugaMas on July 29, 2006 9:09 AM

Maybe this is just stating the obvious, but I also wanted to add that the "Exclude" function doesn't work.

Posted by: pxf on July 29, 2006 9:10 AM

"Maybe this is just stating the obvious, but I also wanted to add that the "Exclude" function doesn't work.""

It works for me.

Posted by: CREB on July 29, 2006 11:54 AM

The "Exclude" function does not work for me, i.e. with Rosetta apps, which will not start up 50% of the time with SS beta 2 (2 GB RAM) even if I exclude them, few apps running.

Evaristo

Posted by: evaristo on July 29, 2006 12:45 PM

^ yeah, it seems the exclude function doesn't include Rosetta apps, so to speak... I should have been more specific in saying that it doesn't work for any of the PPC apps.

Sweet beta so far. Only problem i've had so far is that wh en i go to safari the theme goes back to normal =\ bummer

Posted by: Mark on July 29, 2006 8:38 PM

I still have problems with MS Word/Excel using beta 2. Initially, on first boot (since installing b2), both apps launched. On subsequent attempts to launch them though, the dock icons bounce once, and that's it. The only way I can get those two apps to work reliably, is an uninstall of SS. Also, the top menu bar does is not properly colored/shaded (using BBX Mercury as an example theme) around the area of third party add-on menu items, when first logging in, or re-starting. The theme must be manually re-applied for the menu bar to be shaded correctly around those add-on icons.

Posted by: Mark S on July 29, 2006 10:11 PM

not sure if anyone has mentioned this to you but you might want to update the ape in the other recently intel released versions of your haxies. trying to install silk after shapeshifter causes all kinds of problems.

Posted by: Christian on July 29, 2006 11:19 PM

Using 2.4b2: Problems running Adobe Photoshop CS, Windows Media Player as well as issues with the PPC version of VLC (possibly unrelated as when using universal version works fine, but I thought I'd mention it none the less). Applications bounce once in dock then fail to load, however when set to open at login they load and work, but once closed are unable to open again.... An email with any help on the issue if you've got a moment would mean I'll give you my left kidney.

Otherwise, a fine bit of software.

i was tweaking the theme NEOS 2.2.1 in guiTweak. i was able to export 1 variant, but all other times it said "Unexpected error occurred." i tried everything, but it just doesn't work.

Posted by: SadSpoon on July 30, 2006 9:13 AM

I have a mbp 2.16ghz 2gigs ram and all that good stuff even after a reboot after the install of the latest beta I have a crash on one app so far and that is StuffIt Expander. I have tried to put it in the exclude file but that does not work. I have tried the "sudo killall translated" command in terminal and that does not work. This happens with whatever theme I try.

Any ideas on how to make this bad puppy of a program behave while running SS? I would get rid of StufIt if I could but then I would not be able to do anything with sit files.

Thanks

Things we running smoothly yesterday, with the latest beta, and then today it all went to pot. Word won't launch and I can't get my drop down menus to work in Finder (can't empty trash, etc.).

Thanks,
G.

My apologies for the incorrect command I gave above to determine the version of APE you have installed - it's only valid for the developer SDK version, not for the ordinary user version. You can use the following Terminal command to find your version of APE:

defaults read /Library/Frameworks/ApplicationEnhancer.framework/Resources/Info CFBundleGetInfoString

Again, in release versions, you can just check the APE preference pane instead of having to go through the Terminal.

Still working on the Rosetta issue.

Congratulations for release. I posted it to Usenet with beta warnings and (do not post to versiontracker) warnings.

Hi I've had three kernel panics since I've installed the unibin shapeshifter beta.

here are thge logs:

seems to happen when the computer goes into sleep mode?

Here's my specs:Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: iMac
Machine Model: iMac4,1
CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
Number Of Cores: 2
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B03
Serial Number: ************
SMC Version: 1.1f5

Not 100% sure it's shapeshifter, but I've never had a panic until I installed it.

If it's not related to shapeshifter but the codes tell you of some other issue with my machine, please let me know via email :) I've also installed memory about a week before the crashes.

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 2:41 PM

One more thing: this has happened with both b1 and b2 builds.

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 2:42 PM

Most wake from sleep kernel panics are due to a bad USB device. like the FAR majority of them. Such as having a bad USB hub or having USB soundsticks plugged into a USB hub. In every case I've seen of this being the case, removing items from the USB chain and finding the faulty device/port fixes the wake from sleep kernel panics.

Posted by: Rosyna on July 31, 2006 2:44 PM

I just tested everything with techtool deluxe, and my RAM and USB ports are a.o.k. So I'm convinced it's being caused by shapeshifter, maybe it's not happening during wake, it just seems like that's when it happens. Oh, also once I uninstalled shapeshifter, the panics stop, whether it be waking from sleep or not. :\

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 3:51 PM

email us a system profiler report. Also, TechTool only tests for specific kind of failures. It may not find every single kind of failure.

For what it's worth, Shapeshifter runs in user land, it cannot cause a kernel panic.

The guiTweak thing mentioned before was due to buggy Mac OS X graphic card drivers. SS itself doesn't use CoreImage while running normally.

Posted by: Rosyna on July 31, 2006 3:54 PM

Ok Maybe shapeshifter can't cause a kernel panic, what about APE? The panics started the same day as the 2.01 release, which I updated to. I'll send you my system profiler report asap. :)

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 4:21 PM

APE is the reason why SS can't. SS is a "client" of APE and has all the limitations APE does, including not affecting root processes. And APE is the thing that lives in user space.

The other issue is, the panic log format for the ICBMs doesn't appear to be well documented on http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html (which hasn't been updated since 2003)

Posted by: Rosyna on July 31, 2006 4:26 PM

oops my mistake 2.0.1 was june 27th not july, but I do remember updating ape after that :\

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 4:27 PM

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll have to reinstall OS X because I just had another panic not coming out of sleep. Is hardware malfunction the only thing that causes a panic?

Posted by: Binary on July 31, 2006 4:29 PM

Hi Jason,

Your terminal command says:
Application Enhancer 2.0.2b1, Copyright \2512002 - 2006, Unsanity, LLC.

APE preference pane says:
2.0.1

I can confirm issues with all Rosetta apps. They start only once when I start my computer. Usually I can use my computer MBP a full day without restarting. Now I need to restart quite a few time s each day, each time an application refuses to start.

Cheers,

- J

Binary, good to hear that the kernel panic isn't our issue. Not surprising, but good to know. :)

Jacques, you've got the correct version of APE. We only update the string in the preference pane for non-beta versions.

The Rosetta issue is most definitely confirmed. The "sudo killall translated" terminal command will allow you to use Rosetta apps without rebooting, but obviously, that's kludgy. We're working on a real fix.

There is only one problem I can see quickly after applying a theme.

I'm using Alluminum Alloy 1.7, and I noticed the Apple Remote Desktop Menu Extra didn't quite convert properly. The default icon is being displayed as the active icon. After clicking on it, however, it shows the correct inverted icon for the menu extra.

I also tried a second theme, Shinobi, and it had the same conversion problem. So it appears that one MenuExtra doesn't quite transfer directly properly...

hello :-)

i have a problem. when i click on "Update: Grab ShapeShifter 2.4b2"

i get a shapeshifter 2.3.1 version image !?

what is wrong?

Posted by: magicmacman on August 8, 2006 3:15 AM

Yeah, whenever I try to download the new beta from the blog article I keep getting the 2.3.1 image instead. What is going on?

Posted by: SamBlock on August 28, 2006 12:35 PM

SamBlock, you should look at the most recent posts for the latest ShapeShifter beta. Once a new beta is released, the old one is removed.

Posted by: Rosyna on August 28, 2006 12:38 PM

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM(the one with the beta downloading as 2.3.1 instead of the cool new beta that will do wonders and stuff) ...heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!

I've tried downloading this several times and each time the package inside the beta is actually a 2.3.1 installer.

Can anyone help me with a URL for an Intel Mac version that has the correct package inside?

Thanks

Posted by: Ian Lloyd on November 22, 2006 5:36 PM

I am having the same problem, where the 2.3.1 installer is inside the package.

Posted by: drock on November 23, 2006 5:59 PM

There's a newer beta. Take a look here.
